State-of-the-art Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber
The hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is conducted in ADELI Center’s Oxymed Department. The center is equipped with modern, 14-seat, hyperbaric chamber from German company Haux. The chamber is in tune with the latest technology and allows both optimal treatment and regular monitoring by specially trained physicians and additional computer monitoring.
The chamber has space for up to twelve patients and two specially trained staff who attend to the patients during treatment.
Audio and video entertainment is available at request during the 60 to 120-minute-long sessions in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber.
Oxygen Deficiency – Common Cause of Brain Damage
- Lack of oxygen during birth is a known cause of cerebral palsy and other neurological deficits in children. The deficiency leads to a brain haemorrhage and subsequent damage to the infantile brain.
- Oxygen deficiency in the brain tissue of adults is most often the cause of stroke.
Damaged brain cells are lost, but all around the site of injury, there are intact inactive cells, the so-called “idling neurons” that can be reactivated.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
The air we breathe consists of 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and various other gases such as argon, neon or helium. In contrast to this naturally occurring air mixture, this oxygen therapy uses pure, 100% oxygen that is inhaled at a pressure of 0.7 to 1.3 bar (equivalent pressure to a depth of 10-20 m below sea level) in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Patients inhale the oxygen through a face mask, or special certified helmets for children. Thus, the oxygen content in the body rises up to 25-times. As a result, blocks in the oxygen supply to major body systems are overcome and numerous functions activated.
The therapy is painless, non-invasive and with a thorough, individual and qualified medical care before and during therapy, also absolutely safe. During the 60 to 120-minute sessions in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber, it is possible to increase the comfort by selecting either audio or video material per patient’s wishes.
Following successful application in the ICU, this method is now also used in neurorehabilitation.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Effects
The effect of this therapy is based on the increased oxygen content in the body, which stimulates DNA in each cell, promoting the growth of new tissue, extrudes harmful oxygen radicals, reduces and heals inflammation (e.g., wounds, bed sores, inflammation of bone), excites latent neurons and improves cerebral blood flow and glucose metabolism.
Reactivating Dormant Brain Cells
Even in areas of the brain that are no longer supplied with blood, hyperbaric oxygenation leads to re-oxygenation of the damaged areas and inactive cells. Dormant neurons are reactivated, and the restoration of certain brain functions is made possible.
It is important that the new brain capacities are supported immediately after their activation: intensive neurorehabilitation and proprioceptive stimulation at the ADELI Medical Center is a proven method to relearn the right locomotor functions and implement them as independently as possible.
