The treatment programme at the ADELI Medical Center is structured in the form of intensive rehabilitation courses with durations of 2, 3 or 4 weeks.
The treatment takes place for several hours a day (on an average 5 hours) and on 6 days a week – except for early intervention in case of infants and toddlers, which only takes place from Monday to Friday.
The treatment programme is structured according to the diagnosis, anamnesis, current condition of the patient and his/her prognosis for progress. The treatment includes fixed, variable and additional therapy components that are structured according to the case history and the subsequent recommendations of the doctor in-charge.
The procedures included in the therapy programme of every patient
It is the main part of the ADELI treatment programme. This method includes a comprehensive set of neuropsychological exercises in the ADELI suit that are individually tailored and customised based on the form, degree and the specifics of the patient’s condition.
Each patient gets his own ADELI suit with approximately 120 minutes of neurophysiological, physiotherapeutic and occupational motion exercises per day. The therapeutic effect of the exercises on the damaged central nervous system is significantly increased by utilizing the specialized suit.
The exercises performed during the rehabilitation course provide reinforcement and relative normalisation of the afferent nerve impulses leading out from the muscles and joints. The central brain structures responsible for motion activity are activated with these exercises. The application of devices from space neurology during the ADELI treatment programme allows alleviation of the pathological reflexes and accelerates the development of new physiological movement patterns.
The patient is accompanied by his/her own team of 2-3 physiotherapists.
An integral part of the therapeutic process is the Occupational Therapy (OT) which uses treatment methods to develop, recover or maintain the daily living skills of patients. The treatment and exercises performed on neurophysiological basis are structured so that each 2-hour session contains approximately 40 minutes of OT or Ergotherapy. Here, the therapy intervention focuses on adapting to the environment, modifying the tasks and teaching the patient necessary skills to increase the participation and performance of daily activities. Optionally, it can include educating the client/family on what exercises or adaptations should be implemented when the patient returns home.
The massage is performed by a highly-qualified masseur and it takes between 45 and 60 minutes. It is an inseparable part of the treatment program, as it serves muscle regeneration after an intensive proprioception training (proprioception being the constant physical sense and continuous perception of one’s body movements; thus used as the cornerstone for rehabilitation programs). The massage as a healing method has an extraordinary importance in the treatment and after-care. It is a set of grapples that the masseur applies onto the body of the client. Masseur stimulates the skin, subcutaneous tissue and particularly the muscles, which improves skin blood circulation, releases muscle tension and removes stress. The massage enhances the effectiveness of other treatments conducted the same day.
Thermo-Cryo contrast applications have a facilitating function for the blood circulation and muscle tone normalization; they also help to prepare the body systems for the intensive neurophysiologic training and proprioception. The hot/cold elements are applied individually on respective body zones to activate the motor systems before the intensive and long therapy.
During the fango/mud wrap treatment, the warm mud with natural substances is applied directly onto the body of patient. Moor mud (also known as therapeutic peat moss) is an organic substance, product of natural decomposition of multitudes of plants and consists of organic residue of herbs, flowers and grasses. It has an unusual concentration of acids, minerals, trace elements and vitamins – all in a form that is easy for the human skin to absorb.
There are many benefits of the moor mud treatment. It promotes blood circulation, stimulates the immune system, fosters muscular relaxation, relieves the pain, detoxifies the organism and improves the range of motions. Among the numerous positive effects of the mud application, the following are particularly relevant for our patients: the reduction of muscle tenseness, improved nutrition to the bones, cartilage, intervertebral discs and connective tissues.
During the manual therapy, the joints, spine and soft body segments are treated manually by a specialized doctor. The application consists of several diagnostic and therapeutic methods, which serve recognition and treatment of functional disorders of the gross motor functions. De-blocking of bones and muscles is achieved through special loosening and grip techniques. Among others, contractions are diminished, muscles relaxed, head and trunk control is corrected.
The patient undergoes one or two of the following procedures. The therapies should optimally match his condition and improvement potential
The reflex therapy stimulates the acupuncture zones for a further development of the central nervous system. It is a unique method ensuring a high efficiency of laser radiation of the blood. The effectiveness of the laser-light method on affecting the blood properties has been demonstrated by improving the nutrition of joints. With the enhanced blood flow, more oxygen and nutrients are transported to the vital elements of the musculoskeletal system. An improvement and relief of pain in the joints is observable as well as better blood circulation in the legs.
Additionally, this therapy fuels energy, increases strength, endurance and stamina. Another benefit is the rheology of the blood and vasodilatory effect of the therapy. The laser therapy thus cleans unwanted deposits from the blood vessels, which cures all the symptoms of blood vessel, heart and brain diseases. The treatment thus treats diseases of the nervous system, dilutes the blood and normalises the immune system.
Magnetic stimulation in the ADELI Center is focused on the treatment and enhancement of the organism using the pulsating low-frequency magnetic field. Long-term experience and numerous clinical studies show that pulsating magnetic field produces much better results than the static field. The effect of the magnetic field is localised at the interface of cells in the tissues and is based on the change of electric potential on the surface of cells.
This phenomenon leads to the following reactions: pain relief (analgesic effect), regeneration and deep-tissue massage, promotion of metabolic processes, acceleration of cell regeneration and of the healing processes, slowing down the inflammatory processes, elimination of muscle tension and swelling, harmonisation of the autonomic nervous system, strengthening and stabilisation of bone tissue and mitigation of joint and muscle pains.
The stimulating polarised light of the bio-lamp has the ability to penetrate deep into the targeted structures. Then it acts specifically on the cell membranes, enhances cellular metabolism, and thus greatly accelerates the regenerative capacity and the healing process. It reduces the perception of pain and prevents inflammation in the tissues. The light energy is absorbed by the tissue which it gradually penetrates, causing effects which are very important from the therapeutic point of view. They include augmentation of energy, strength and endurance, increased binding and transport of the oxygen in the blood, reduction of blood lactate after physical strain, increased resistance to stress and so on. The disease and degenerative processes in the cells are slowed down and from this perspective, this phenomenon is of strategic importance for the further course of the treatment processes affecting the entire body.
During an oxygen therapy session, the patient is breathing a mixture with up to 85-90% oxygen – whereas normal air contains only about 20%. This treatment improves the oxygen supply to the entire body – and particularly to the brain – and thus facilitates many therapeutic effects, such as higher energy and faster regeneration after an intensive neurophysiology. The oxygen therapy supports the metabolism of the brain, which is of a high significance for our patients. Through breathing pure oxygen, the emotional and physical conditions of the patient are visibly improved, especially by increasing the stress resistance and reducing the consequences of stress.
The magnet-light-laser therapy has been rapidly developing in the recent years. Due to its high effectiveness and wide-range application in every field of medicine, it is currently considered one of the most promising methods. Therapy session works as a gentle push, which activates self-regulatory mechanisms of the body. Metabolic processes in cells and tissues normalise, the organism is cleansed, and blood circulation is improved, particularly in the weakened and diseased organs. The defensive means of the organism that cope with diseases are improved and the organism is recovered. It has been clinically proven that, in some cases, the magnet-light-laser therapy effectiveness is 98%. Besides, in comparison with other methods, the recovery time shortens by half, while the physical and mental power of the body is considerably raised.
In addition, other therapies can be used for patients. The decision about the possibility of applying the following treatments and its intensity is made by the responsible and specialized physician of the ADELI Medical Center.
The Oxymed Center is equipped with the most modern, 14-seat, hyperbaric chamber from the German company Haux. It provides a therapeutic method where the patient breathes 100% oxygen in an environment with a pressure higher than the atmospheric pressure (precisely, in a pressure equivalent from 10 to 20 meters below the sea level). Patients breathe 100% oxygen through face masks, while certified helmets are available for children. Hyperbaric oxygen is capable of reaching the so-called “sleeping cells”, which are located mainly in the brain and in the nervous tissue, and it gradually wakes up their metabolism. The therapeutic effect of this therapy stimulates the DNA in each cell, promotes the growth of new tissue, displaces the maleficent oxygen radicals, reduces and heals inflammation (for example, wounds, pressure ulcers, bone), stimulates the dormant neurons and improves the cerebral blood flow and glucose metabolism.
The purpose of the speech therapy is to improve the patient’s speech ability and to further facilitate communication (neurophysiological exercise generally has significant positive effect on speech). The speech improvement sessions in the ADELI Center are done only by doctors with specialization in logopedic/speech area of medicine. Depending on the form (dysarthria, aphasia, dyslalia etc.), respective exercises, tongue and face massages are applied. Among others – sound, swallow, and breathing exercises, oro-facial massages, Castillo-Morales methods and sensomotoric lessons are used.
Biofeedback based on the encephalogram is a method of fostering cognitive abilities. In particular, it strengthens abilities such as intellect, concentration and attention/ motivation to accomplish tasks, self-control, etc. The treatment is performed in the form of a computer game or practice. During the exercise, the brain processes and sequences can be analyzed and positively stimulated by the EEG and the innovative computerized technology. As a part of the treatment course, the results will be measured and evaluated. This active promotion of the central nervous system brings about a significant improvement in cognitive skills and intellect in 90% of cases. Even patients who are often unmotivated like to “play” along with it very much. Because patients can concentrate better, be more cooperative and motivated and can improve their intellect skills, they also reach better results in the movement and language exercises.
The principle of treatment on the vibration platform is based on the natural movement of human gait. The platform’s side-alternating motion is similar to a seesaw movement with variable frequency, and therefore stimulates a movement pattern similar to human gait. The rapid movement of the training platform causes a tilting movement of the pelvis, just like when walking, but much more frequently. To compensate, the body responds with rhythmic muscle contractions, alternating between the left and right side of the body. These muscle contractions are not a conscious process but, rather, are a reflex. This stretch reflex activates the muscles in the legs, the stomach and the back right up into the trunk. Because the vibration platform produces similar stimulus patterns used when walking, in addition to the basic muscle functions itself, the interaction between different muscle groups and their coordination, is developed perfectly resulting in an increase in muscle power.
The MFE is composed of a bench, pulleys and ropes and is an extremely versatile piece of equipment that can be used in a multitude of ways to benefit patients with neurological conditions. Using resistive weights, the MFE strengthens muscles while reinforcing to the brain the correct pattern of movement for each limb. For example, it can also be used for positioning and supporting the child on all fours in a crawling position. While this helps to build muscle tone and strength in the arms, legs and shoulders, a secondary benefit is that with the child looking straight ahead it also improves head control. By induction of resistive force (weights) and avoiding compensatory movements from weakened or affected group of muscles, while gravitational force is eliminated, the exercise can be focused on a particular proper movement.
Hydrotherapy, or water therapy, is the use of water (hot, cold, steam, or ice) to relieve discomfort and promote physical well-being. The recuperative and healing properties of hydrotherapy are based on its mechanical and/or thermal effects. There are numerous proposed mechanisms of action of hydrotherapy, depending on the specific technique used. It exploits the body’s reaction to hot and cold stimuli, to the protracted application of heat, to pressure exerted by the water and to the sensation it gives. Alternating cold with hot temperatures is suggested to alter blood circulation due to enhance the immune system and improve digestion. Applying warmth to skin surfaces does cause vasodilatation which brings blood to the body’s surface. Cold temperature has the contrary effect. When you submerge yourself in a bath, a pool, or a whirlpool, you experience a kind of weightlessness. Your body is relieved from the constant pull of gravity. Water also has a hydrostatic effect. It has a massage- like feeling as the water gently kneads your body. Physical therapy in water makes use of buoyancy (ability to float) to reduce work against gravity, as well as the resistance of motion through water.
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy which integrates visual arts to treatment programme. The patient learns to communicate with the outside world, improving his/her concentration, perception, self-expression, self-reflection, and visual and verbal arrangement of experiences. The patient has the opportunity to express his or her feelings, needs, motivations and their processing, which lead the patient to an overall development and better adaptation in life.
